Rick Ross Talks Reebok Partnership, Jay-Z & 'Self Made 3' Album

Rick Ross Talks Reebok Partnership, Jay-Z & 'Self Made 3' Album
Even though Rick Ross lost his deal with Reebok this year, the Miami-based rapper continues to sport and promote the sneaker brand.
"I'm still supporting Reebok. I'm still wearing Reebok," he said in an interview last week. "It's nothing more than that. I've been wearing Reebok my whole life. ...Still got nothing but love for Reebok."
The burly, husky-voiced Ross became known for his colorful and heavy lyrics, rapping about the grimy street life, money, luxury cars and women. But the Grammy-nominated performer took things too far on Rocko's song, "U.O.E.N.O," where he raps about giving a woman the drug MDMA, known as Molly, and having his way with her. Petitions were issued by women's groups and rape victims.
Opinion: Rick Ross' 'U.O.E.N.O.' Lyric Condones Rape Despite Denial
Reebok terminated its contract with Ross in April following the heavy criticism.
But Ross says he has moved on and learned from the setback. In a recent interview with The Associated Press, the 37-year-old talked about Reebok, his acting career — he appears in the Starz drama "Magic City" — his relationship with Jay-Z and his compilation album, "Rick Ross Presents: Self Made 3," released Tuesday.
____
AP: What did you learn from your setback with Reebok?
Ross: You live and you learn. I think the most unfortunate thing about the whole situation was just the fact that my lyrics offended some ladies, especially dealing with the topic of rape. It was interpreted as rape. I really wanted to make sure that I apologize to any woman that I offended in that way. I just wanted to make that clear. When I make music and I'm talking on records, it's like I'm painting a picture. In my mind, I'm seeing a film. I apologize.
How did the women close to you feel about the situation?
They know where I stand as far as women. They know the level of respect I have for women. With my mother being the most beautiful woman in the world, she knows where I'm coming from.
Jay-Z has supported you since he signed you to Def Jam in 2006. How has he helped you through your maturation?
He's been a part of pretty much every project I've put together as a solo artist. He's always been there any time I've made a call. It's just an array of things I've learned from him outside of music, like handling business and money. ...I come from down South where I want the music, bass and the beats that shake the walls. Hov talked to me about performing (and) what live music brings to the table.
This is your label's third compilation album and it mainly features you, Wale and Meek Mill. Why do you think it's beneficial to release a compilation album?
When you see compilations like this, you see longevity. With us, we have people who are on top of their game. But we want to bring more artists into the fold, and give young artists an opportunity to be on the same playing field with us. That in itself speaks volumes to someone at home chasing their dreams.
What was going through your mind when you first saw yourself on "Magic City" as the character Butterball?
Honestly, when I saw myself come out from around that corner, I was really amazed by how handsome I looked. It's like I got to see myself outside of seeing myself. I said to myself, 'Wow, that's an attractive (expletive) there. Not to mention, he's rich.' I just kind of laughed at myself. All the calls I had coming in, everybody was (messing) with me, picking at me and saying how I charged out to the car. They said I was talking like I was not me. I told them, 'So what ... I'm a boss.'
Do you want to act more?
I think it's super cool when you're able to act, but I'm really exciting if it's something I'm a fan of. There are a lot of films that I see and like today, but it doesn't necessarily make me want to be a part of it. Even if I had the opportunity or the offers, I could pass. I've passed on many films and lost checks, but that's not what drives me to act. On "Magic City," in particular, it's a show pertaining to my city (Miami). Once I began watching it, I became a fan.

Rihanna Takes Selfie With Protected Primate in Thailand; Animal Keepers Arrested

Rihanna took a selfie with a protected primate in Thailand
Pop star Rihanna spent a weekend at the beach in Thailand, leaving behind a trail of racy tweets and incriminating Instagram photographs that led police to arrest two people for allegedly peddling protected primates.
On a break from her Diamonds World Tour, Rihanna stopped in Thailand to visit the island of Phuket, where she befriended some local wildlife. She posted a link on Twitter to an Instagram photo that showed her in sunglasses snuggling up to a furry primate called the slow loris, and tweeted Friday: "Look who was talkin dirty to me!"
The slow loris, a squirrel-like animal with big eyes, is native to Southeast Asia and is listed as a protected species.
"Phuket authorities were alerted to the picture (of Rihanna), and last night police arrested the two individuals who brought out the loris as a photo opportunity for tourists," a Phuket district chief, Weera Kerdsirimongkon, said by telephone Sunday.
Police confiscated two lorises from the pair — a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy — who could face charges of possession of protected animals. The charge carries a penalty of up to four years in prison and a 40,000 baht ($1,300) fine.
Weera said authorities have tried for years to crack down on the problem of vendors exploiting wildlife, particularly in popular tourist areas where people pay to pose for pictures with elephants, orangutans and other animals.
"It's like a cat-and-mouse game. But this time it's bigger because a celebrity like Rihanna posted the picture, and there were more than 200,000 'likes' from around the world," he said.
Rihanna also posted pictures of herself playing with a herd of elephants in the street Friday night, after which she tweeted: "They all hail Empress when She walk by."
On the same night, she tweeted a few unprintable comments about what she apparently witnessed at an adult show in one of Phuket's red-light districts.
Saturday's tweets were devoted to the beach and photographs of the singer in a black bikini on a boat surrounded by turquoise water with limestone cliffs in the distance.
Before leaving Thailand on Sunday, she tweeted from the airport: "Gave the immigration guy my passport and he handed me this in return without a word. Lol." It was a picture of the singer that said "I love Rihanna."
Her next stop was Singapore before heading to Australia and New Zealand

Common: 'We Got To Do More' About Chicago Violence

Day in the Life: Big Sean

The hip-hop star is pushing for educational efforts and wants rappers to join the cause.

Grammy-award winning hip hop artist Common, who has openly worried about the violence in Chicago, was in his hometown Friday to help celebrate the city's music scene when he was confronted with a brutal reminder of what he's been talking about: a story about a hail of gunfire that wounded 13 people.
"It makes me think I got to do more; we got to do more," he said in an interview with The Associated Press after giving a speech as the keynote speaker at the Chicago Music Summit, a conference to help local musicians and music professionals with their careers.
Police say Thursday night's shooting appears to be gang related. For the 41-year-old Common, that underscores concerns that the edgy rap music of the generation of rappers that came behind him is not only providing the soundtrack for gangs, but might just be helping to fuel the fire of gang violence.
"To decide to take someone's life, I don't think they let a rap song determine that," he said, adding that rap artists simply reflect of the violence of the streets, and don't cause it. At the same time, he said, fans of young rappers, whose music provides a window into a violent lifestyle, are "influenced by that energy and take it the wrong way."
Common has thought about it enough to once suggest a "peace summit" with Chief Keef, a younger Chicago rapper whose music includes references to weapons and who was arrested after pointing a gun at police officers and after a video showed him firing a semi-automatic rifle at a gun range.
In fact, rap music made its way into Thursday's shooting. A relative of a 3-year-old boy who was shot in the face said the child's uncle was an aspiring rapper who was fatally shot in Chicago this month.
Such a link is not surprising to Grammy-winning rap artist, Che "Rhymefest" Smith. He said he believes that at the very least aspiring rappers who are living in poor neighborhoods see the display of a violent gang lifestyle as their route to riches and fame.
"What you get with a lot of young artists is if they gang bang on YouTube, pull guns and threaten someone else, this will give them a million YouTube views or 80,000 Twitter followers overnight," said Rhymefest, a Chicago resident who once ran for a seat on the City Council. "They see it as a check, a way to get paid and this way out of poverty."
Common said the key to ending the cycle of violence that rap music has been linked to for years is more educational programs and other initiatives, and that rap artists should help those programs in any way they can.
At the same time, Common, who has his own foundation that exposes disadvantaged young people to the creative arts, said that while he still believes a "peace summit" would be effective, it is only a first step.
"There has to be a consistent follow through," he said. "Young people ... some of them may not be in a place where they can say, `OK, I'm going to stop (violent behavior)'" he said. "It may be a process. You have to deal with that."

Testimony Ends in Michael Jackson Civil Trial

Michael Jackson: His Life In Photos

Closing arguments are expected to begin Tuesday as the case over the King of Pop's death heads for a conclusion.

Testimony ended Friday in a long-running lawsuit claiming the promoter of Michael Jackson's planned comeback concerts was negligent in hiring the doctor convicted of causing the death of the superstar.
Closing arguments were expected to begin on Tuesday, with the case possibly going to jurors later next week.
Lawyers for Katherine Jackson, who filed the suit involving her son, concluded testimony in the 21-week case after jurors heard from Michael Jackson's longtime personal physician, Dr. Allan Metzger, and his attorney.
Metzger testified about Jackson's skin conditions, burns and other injuries that required medical care by a variety of doctors. He also described Jackson's generosity.
Jackson died in 2009 at his rented mansion in Los Angeles while preparing for the "This Is It" shows in London. Dr. Conrad Murray was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter for giving him an overdose of the anesthetic propofol, a drug Jackson took to help him sleep.
Metzger considered Jackson a close friend and served as best man at the singer's wedding to Debbie Rowe.
Metzger said over two days of testimony that he thought Jackson engaged in some doctor shopping but only used prescription medications to treat legitimate pain.
"He needed it," Metzger said. "He didn't take it for joy."
The doctor was among more than 50 witnesses in the case that began on April 29 with opening statements.
Both sides introduced testimony from Metzger. Lawyers for AEG Live, the target of the lawsuit, played his videotaped testimony detailing Jackson's use of multiple doctors and his close friendship with the singer.
Attorneys for Jackson's mother called Metzger as a rebuttal witness to remind the jury about Jackson's generosity toward charities and the enormous pain he endured after his scalp was burned during a Pepsi commercial shoot in 1984.
In a twist, Metzger's attorney Eric George was the final witness and testified about how he came to represent the doctor after previously working for Rowe in the case.
George said he agreed to represent Metzger for a reduced rate after the doctor contacted him. He also said there was no conflict with his previous representation of Rowe.
AEG Live denies it hired Murray or bears any responsibility for the singer's death.
Also on Friday, Judge Yvettte Palazuelos ruled that Katherine Jackson was financially dependent to at least some extent on her son for necessities of life, and the family matriarch is entitled to damages if jurors find AEG Live liable for her son's death.

Michael Jackson Statue To Be Pulled From English Soccer Stadium

Michael Jackson Statue To Be Pulled From English Soccer Stadium
A divisive statue of Michael Jackson outside an English professional soccer club’s homeground is to be removed.
Businessman Mohamed Al Fayed commissioned the statue following Jackson's death in June 2009, with the intention for it to find a home at his Harrods store in London. Al Fayed sold Harrods in 2010, and the statue was erected outside the grounds of his Fulham Football Club.
At the time, Al Fayed told fans they could "go to hell" if they didn’t appreciate the gloved Jackson statue. Al Fayed insists Jackson was a fan of the club, and the artist attended a match in 1999.
Despite his best intentions, fans of the club didn’t warm to the Jackson tribute.
Al Fayed sold his stake in Fulham FC over the summer, and now the statue will be returned to him.
The club’s new owner has issued a statement explaining the decision, which was made after two months of dialog with the club’s fans. The removal of the statue at Craven Cottage stadium “is the right thing for Fulham Football Club,” the team’s new chairman Shahid Khan says.

It’s not the only time a larger-than-life likeness of Jackson has been a big talking point in London. In 1995, to promote the “HIStory” album, a giant statue of Jackson was floated down the Thames river.
The Tower Bridge was raised to let the 30-foot high statue pass through.

John Legend Marries Chrissy Teigen in Italy

Music Star Hookups & Breakups
After an engagement of nearly two years, John Legend has married his fiancee, supermodel Chrissy Teigen.
According to Us Weekly, the couple was wed Saturday (Sept. 14) at an intimate ceremony in Lake Como, a popular tourist retreat in northern Italy.
Legend and Teigen were joined by a slew of celebrity guests at the wedding, including Kanye West -- who executive produced Legend's newest album -- and Brooklyn Decker. The latter served as one of Teigen's bridesmaids.
The couple became engaged during a vacation in the Maldives in December 2011 after a four-year dating period.
His wedding caps off a solid few weeks for the R&B singer from Ohio. "Love in the Future," Legend's fourth studio album, was released last week to modest acclaim. The album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, selling 68,000 copies in its first week, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan.

Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne Escort Floyd Mayweather to the Ring: Watch

Before dominating Camelo Alvarez at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night, boxer Floyd Mayweather got a pair of music heavyweights to escort him into the ring. None other than Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber were on hand deliver the welterweight champ to the match in a splashy display.
With a stoic Bieber on his left and a shirtless Wayne on his right, the trio walked through the arena while the rapper spat out some improvised rhymes -- Mayweather's nickname ("Money") was used liberally

Go Behind Lana Del Rey's 'Summertime' Surge

A surprise success story even in a summer filled with them ("Blurred Lines," "The Fox"), Lana Del Rey is celebrating the first crossover hit of her career and a recent re-entry into the top 20 of the Billboard 200 thanks to a dark-horse dance remix of a song released in its original form nearly 20 months ago.
"Summertime Sadness," driven by a remix by the French DJ/producer Cedric Gervais, moves up the Billboard Hot 100, rising 10-6. But the song wasn't actually intended for release in America, climbing its way to the U.S. top 10 from an unlikely start in Germany seven months ago.

Initially commissioned in January for Universal Germany,
Lana Del Rey

Del Rey's American and U.K. labels-Interscope and Polydor, respectively-at first passed on the remix, which by then was already a year removed from Born to Die, her 2012 debut on which the original "Summertime Sadness" first appeared. But after the song shot to No. 1 on influential electronic music digital retailer Beatport in the spring, a few radio programmers took it upon themselves to put the remix into rotation.
"One day I got a call from [Interscope president of promotion Brenda Romano] saying, 'Hey, what would you think if I started working this "Summertime" remix to radio?'" Interscope executive VP of A&R Larry Jackson recalls. "It had been picked up in two markets and we were seeing a real, unmistakable correlation in terms of airplay and sales."
All versions of "Summertime Sadness" have so far sold 1.1 million downloads, with 512,000 of those coming from the remix, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The song's sudden penetration at radio is something of a tipping point for Del Rey, whose career to date has in many ways been defined by a lack of support at top 40.
A product of the Internet age, Del Rey first landed her deal with Interscope in 2011 after her homemade video for the song "Video Games" went viral and crowned her as a new obsession for the blogosphere. But what made "Video Games" captivating to online audiences-dramatic production, allegorical lyrics and an alluringly melancholic vocal performance-was anathema to radio, which at the time was focused on the dance-pop anthems of Ke$ha and LMFAO.
Following the success of the "Video Games" clip (47 million YouTube views), Interscope approved an elaborate production for "Born to Die," her debut's title track. In the video, Del Rey sits singing on a throne at the center of a palace wearing a white gown and floral reef while flanked by two Bengal tigers. At 120 million views, the clip is one of the most-watched of that year and remains her most popular. Del Rey has more than 330 million views total on YouTube and 1.3 million-plus subscribers.
"As with any artist, you pick and choose what their strengths are," says Ed Millet, Del Rey's co-manager with Ben Mawson, noting the artist's visuals and storytelling ability. "Lana has an incredibly strong visual identity, and that's sort of where we've put our focus."
It was Del Rey's potent imagery that led to her other 2013 breakthrough and the second-best-selling song of her career-"Young and Beautiful," the lead single from Baz Luhrmann's soundtrack to "The Great Gatsby." The filmmaker, known for his own romantic visual style, approached Del Rey about contributing to the project last summer. She agreed-despite momentary misgivings about whether to relinquish what Millet says she declared "the best song I've ever written"-in part because the movie represented another potentially crucial platform for an artist who had been shut out of radio.
"Young and Beautiful" has now sold 780,000 downloads, and is Del Rey's only song besides the "Summertime Sadness" remix to breach the top 25 of the Hot 100, peaking at No. 22. Renewed interest in the singer has pushed total sales of Born to Die to 774,000 and of the subsequent Paradise EP, released in November, to 253,000.
"How many artists can you point to that have had this level of success using purely online and alternative methods of exposure?" Jackson asks. "No top 40 play, no Grammy nominations, no MTV Awards ... We're only now starting to see the mainstream acceptance of this, and we have a lot more to come."

Carlos Santana Uninjured in Las Vegas Car Crash

Carlos Santana Uninjured in Las Vegas Car Crash
Police say Carlos Santana drove into an unoccupied parked car near an upscale area of Las Vegas, but escaped injury.
The Grammy-winning superstar was headed home alone when the accident occurred Friday night in Summerlin.
Police Lt. Ken Romane told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that it's uncertain whether a sobriety field test was conducted, but Santana was not driving under the influence.
Romane did not know the make of Santana's vehicle or the extent of damage to it and the parked car. Romane said the accident was "minor."
According to his concert schedule, the 66-year-old Santana performed on Thursday and Saturday nights but not on Friday night.
Santana has won 15 Grammys and is best known for the album "Supernatural," which has sold more than 25 million copies.

Beyonce Nearly Pulled Off Stage in Brazil

Beyonce Nearly Pulled Off Stage in Brazil: Watch
Beyoncé got more than she bargained for when she brought her “Mrs. Carter Show” to Brazil -- she nearly got yanked into the audience by an over-enthusiastic fan.
The incident happened when Bey played the Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo on Sunday.
As she made her way to the “Bey Stage” to perform her 2007 hit “Irreplaceable”, the artist got up close and personal with her fans. It all got way too personal when a burly shirtless guy in the front row grabbed the singer and tried to pull her off the stage.
Security steps in, resolves the situation, and gives the fan a death-stare.
Beyonce -- who has had her hair caught in a fan and endured slaps to the butt -- doesn’t miss a beat. Watch the clip below.

Tim McGraw Returning to Big Screen in Disney's 'Tomorrowland'

Tim McGraw Returning to Big Screen in Disney's 'Tomorrowland'
Tim McGraw, no stranger to the movie camera, will begin shooting a new film in the coming days.
Billboard has learned that the Big Machine recording artist will be a part of the upcoming Disney production, "Tomorrowland." Starring George Clooney and directed by Brad Bird ("The Iron Giant," "Ratatouille"), the movie is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters in late 2014.
According to Disney, the film centers on a bright teen (Britt Robertson) and a "former boy-genius inventor" (Clooney) as they embark on a "danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as 'Tomorrowland.'"
The film, which begins shooting next week in Vancouver, will be McGraw’s ninth. He first went before the big screen cameras in 2004 with "Black Cloud," as well as "Friday Night Lights," for which he won rave reviews for the role of Charles Billingsley. Other film highlights for the singer include "The Blind Side," "Four Christmases," and "Country Strong." His most recent foray into making movies was 2011’s "Dirty Girl," starring Juno Temple and featuring fellow country singer-turned-actor, Dwight Yoakam.
McGraw is currently No. 12 on the Hot Country Songs chart with his single, "Southern Girl."

As I Lay Dying's Tim Lambesis To Face Court Over Murder Plot

As I Lay Dying's Tim Lambesis To Face Court Over Murder Plot
The frontman for the Grammy-winning band "As I Lay Dying" is facing a court hearing to determine whether he will stand trial on charges he tried to hire someone to kill his estranged wife.
The prosecution will argue its case against Timothy Lambesis during a preliminary hearing Monday in San Diego Superior Court in Vista.
Prosecutors say Lambesis paid $1,000 to a detective posing as a hit man. Investigators say the undercover operation was staged after the singer told a man at his gym on April 23 and again the next day that he wanted his wife killed, complaining that she was making it difficult for him to see their three adopted children and impossible to complete their divorce.
Lambesis has pleaded not guilty to solicitation for murder.
Prosecutors say the singer was on tour in August when he emailed his wife, Meggan Lambesis, telling her he didn't love her and wanted to end the relationship. Meggan Lambesis, according to prosecutors, later learned her husband was having an affair.
As I Lay Dying Singer Tim Lambesis Posts $2M Bail
They say Lambesis gave the undercover agent a photograph of his wife, her address, security gate code and dates he would be with his children to give him an alibi.
Defense attorney, Thomas Warwick, has said his client had been using steroids for body building and they'd had a devastating effect on his mind. His lawyer did not return calls seeking comment before the hearing.
The singer has been out on $2 million bail since May. He was ordered to wear a GPS monitor and to stay away from Meggan Lambesis and their three children, who were adopted from Ethiopia.
As I Lay Dying's Tim Lambesis Pleads Not Guilty to Murder Solicitation Charge
"As I Lay Dying" formed in San Diego in 2000 and has released six albums, including 2007's "An Ocean Between Us," which reached No. 8 on Billboard's charts. A single from the album, "Nothing Left," was nominated for a Grammy for top metal performance.
The band plays in an aggressive style that features lightening-speed metal guitar riffs. The group's philosophical lyrics have attracted a following of Christian rock fans.
If convicted, Lambesis could face up to nine years in prison.

Lorde Links Longest Alternative Songs Reign By A Woman With 'Royals'

Lorde Links Longest Alternative Songs Reign By A Woman With 'Royals'

The song by the 16-year-old New Zealand singer/songwriter passes Alanis Morissette's 'You Oughta Know' for the longest command for a No. 1 by a lead female soloist

With the appropriately titled "Royals," Lorde scores the longest domination on Billboard's Nielsen BDS-based Alternative Songs chart by a woman (credited as a lead artist). "Royals" leads the list for a sixth week, passing the five-week reign of Alanis Morissette's fellow U.S. breakthrough hit "You Oughta Know" in 1995.
The honor is the latest on what's quickly becoming a deep resume for "Royals." When it reached the Alternative Songs summit five weeks ago, it became the first song by a lead solo female to crown the chart since Tracy Bonham's "Mother Mother" in 1996. On last week's Billboard Hot 100, "Royals" roared 8-3 with top Digital Gainer accolades; it's sold 991,000 downloads to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The track has topped the Hot Rock Songs chart for two weeks and counting.

Tribute Show for Country Singer-Songwriter John Jarrard Turns 12

Before there can be three minutes of audio bliss in an MP3 or CD form, there needs to be the magic that comes from the experience of putting words into music. Fans in the Alabama/Georgia/Tennessee area have a chance to witness that first hand next weekend with the 12th Annual John Jarrard Foundation Concert Songwriters in the Round Show, held in Gainesville, GA.

The event is a tribute to a hometown son who made good -- the late singer-songwriter John Jarrard, the writer of such hits as "Blue Clear Sky" (George Strait), "Is That A Tear" (Tracy Lawrence), and "There’s No Way" (Alabama).
As JJF Executive Director Jody Jackson notes, Jarrard grew up in Gainesville and battled Type 1 diabetes for a number of years.
"He always had a great attitude even though he lost his eyesight, one of his legs, and went through several kidney transplants," Jackson says. The concert was organized to honor Jarrard, who passed away in 2001.
The five songwriters included this year are some pretty heavy hitters - Kent Blazy ("If Tomorrow Never Comes"), Kim Williams ("Three Wooden Crosses"), Doug Johnson ("Love Like Crazy"), Rhett Akins ("Boys 'Round Here"), and Bob Morrison ("You Decorated My Life").
Following Jarrard’s death in 2001, several of his friends (including hit songwriter Bruce Burch) decided to start an event that would serve two purposes – to keep his name alive, and to offer a hand to those in need. Jackson says the event has grown considerably since then. "We had 30 sponsored tables the first year, and it’s exploded ever since. Now, we have over 100 tables packing the Front Lawn of Brenau University. We have since added a free show on Friday night on the town square, and this year we have David Lee Murphy coming in for that, he’s an amazing singer-songwriter who has written a ton of hits."
Jackson says that the JJF tries to spread the proceeds around several local charities that had meaning to the songwriter’s life. "They decided that the beneficiaries of the event would be some of the charities that were real close to John Jarrard – like The Boys and Girls’ Clubs – he grew up going to the boys club playing sports," adds Jackson. "There’s also a charity called the Good News Clinics - they provide free health care and dental care for folks in the community who cannot afford or do not have insurance. There’s a lot of doctors who donate their time to help these folks. Also there’s the Good News at Noon, which is kind of a homeless shelter for gentlemen who have been struggling. They pull them in off the streets, and get them going in a good spiritual direction as well getting their health back and their life back in order."
Jackson said that other charities that will benefit include The United Way, North Georgia Food Bank, Challenged Child, as well as the "Think About It" campaign which raises awareness of prescription drug abuse and also to organizations that further research for leukemia, lymphoma, and, of course, diabetes. "The Foundation has raised over a million dollars since 2001 and continues to help this loving community."
For Jackson, a music industry veteran, the event truly honors an old friend. "We loved him, miss him and what he stood for. We’re helping to keep his name alive and raising money for some great causes. We’ve had some incredible hit songwriters the past eleven years. It’s amazing how the event has grown year after year."
The host for the event, Brenau University, is equally excited to be part of the event. "Brenau University and The John Jarrard Foundation have collaborated over the past several years in bringing great musical entertainment to North Georgia and practical education to aspiring music industry professionals," said University President Dr. Ed Schrader. "Each fall, the JJF presents on Brenau's campus a special evening of philanthropic fund-raising and live musical entertainment from some of the top singers and song writers in Country and Popular music. There is no other event like this in the South and the University is proud of our mutual commitment to advancing the social and cultural quality of life in North Georgia."

Kendrick Lamar Responds to Meek Mill Disses in New York

The MC asserted his role as "king" at his first New York show since his game-changing "Control" verse.

Kendrick Lamar has taken to calling himself the king of New York, and the Los Angeles MC defended his new turf at a show in Williamsburg Park on Tuesday.
In the wake of Lamar's name-checking "Control" verse, Meek Mill has fired off response tracks including "Kendrick You Next" and "Ooh Kill 'Em," prompting some talk (but no diss verses) from Lamar on Tuesday.
"I have no time for irrelevant n***as [or] new n***as," he told the crowd, according to the website All Hip-Hop. "There's one n***a in particular that needs to realize that there's 'levels' to this s**t," a reference to Mills' hit of the same name. "I'm motherf***in' King Kendrick."

Liberace's Ex-Lover Dodges Jail Despite Failed Drug Test

Liberace's Ex-Lover Dodges Jail Despite Failed Drug Test
An ex-lover of Liberace who was the subject of an HBO film on the life of the pianist got a lecture Wednesday from a judge who said he was not impressed with his "so-called celebrity status" but again agreed to spare him from prison time after testing positive for methamphetamine in violation of his probation.
Scott Thorson, 54, acknowledged in Washoe District Court that he's a drug addict and insisted he's determined to get sober and avoid serving up to 20 years in prison for burglary and ID theft convictions.
He said his goal is to write another book on the heels of his "Behind the Candelabra," which was used as the basis for the HBO film of the same name that's nominated for 15 Emmy Awards.
Liberace’s One-Time Las Vegas Mansion Sells For Just $500,000
"I'm just asking for another chance," a tearful Thorson told the judge.
"Getting sober is the most important thing to me. I'm up for 15 Emmys and that is important too. I'm becoming productive and feel good about myself.'
"I can't help who I am. I'm in show business. I attract these cameras," he said in reference to TV coverage in the courtroom. "I want to be sober."
In July, Judge Patrick Flanagan sentenced Thorson to eight to 20 years and suspended the sentence on the condition he complete a drug court program.
Thorson was in compliance with the program for a month, passing all drug tests while staying with a support group in housing provided at a legal brothel in a neighboring county, his lawyer David Houston said. But as a result of a determination by probation officials that he must reside within Washoe County, Houston said Thorson was forced to move into a cheap downtown hotel in Reno where he relapsed.
"He was living in what I would refer to as a drug-infested area," Houston said. "If you put enough stress on an individual and make things seem helpless you do get a certain result - in this case a relapse."
New HBO Liberace Biopic A ‘Great Love Story,’ says Michael Douglas
The 15 Emmy nominations for the movie include lead actor bids for Michael Douglas, who played Liberace, and Matt Damon, who played Thorson.
Deputy District Attorney John Helzer said Thorson, whose real name is Jess Marlow, has been trying to capitalize on his fame since he told arresting officers he couldn't afford the bad publicity of going to jail on charges of stealing a credit card from a motel next door to a Reno strip club last year.
"His perception of being a celebrity is his biggest wall. He's not a celebrity. He's a story. It's one of accusation and manipulation and failure," Helzer said. "He should go to prison."
Flanagan rejected the prosecution's motion to revoke probation and order Thorson to jail but said it would be his last chance.
"I'm not impressed - I don't think anybody is - with this so-called celebrity status," the judge said. "You're just like any other addict who has committed a crime against a victim."

Toby Keith's Tornado Recovery Benefit Raises $2M

Toby Keith's Tornado Recovery Benefit Raises $2M

A tornado relief concert organized by country performer Toby Keith has raised $2 million that will go to a fund run by the United Way of Central Oklahoma - and there's still more money to be counted.
Organizers told the Norman Transcript newspaper that some donations from the July 6 concert at University of Oklahoma's Memorial Stadium are still being calculated. A number of entertainers contributed their time and talent to a relief effort aimed at helping nearby Moore, where 24 people died.
A May 20 tornado cut a 17-mile path of destruction through the Oklahoma City suburb with winds that exceeded 200 mph. Spring storms caused an estimated $1 billion in damage.
The six-hour concert drew about 60,000 people. Performers included Keith, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, Ronnie Dunn and Mel Tillis.
Introducing artists were Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, former Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys football coach Barry Switzer, current OU football head coach Bob Stoops and OU athletic director Joe Castiglione. The event marked the largest number of paid attendees for a concert in the stadium's history.

Police Officer Sara Faden says the founder of Death Row Records was stopped shortly after midnight Wednesday near Beverly Hills. She declined to say what the alleged traffic violation was.

Jay Z's 'Made In America' Doc: Toronto Film Fest Movie Review

Jay Z's 'Made In America' Doc: Toronto Film Fest Movie Review
Less music-stuffed but more conceptually ambitious than the average music doc, Ron Howard's team up with Jay Z, "Made In America," films a two-day music festival curated by the rapper and works to turn it into a youth-centered assessment of the health of the American Dream. Over a dozen artists appear, most both on- and off-stage, a diverse crew that both emphasizes the eclectic musical tastes of today's youth and bolsters Jay Z's talk of increasing pluralism American society. Though the lack of focus on a single star may limit its marketability (many of the performances are good, but this is no Woodstock), the doc could work in special-event bookings and would play well on cable.

Justin Bieber Documentary 'Believe' Gets Secret Screening in Toronto

Justin Bieber Documentary 'Believe' Gets Secret Screening in Toronto
International buyers and Beliebers lined up alongside one another Saturday for the first glimpse of Justin Bieber’s "Believe" at a special screening mounted by IM Global at the Cineplex in Toronto.
The screening, whose location was kept under wraps for fears that it would be swamped by the singer’s legions of fans, gave the attendees a first glimpse of the documentary, a mix of concert footage and interviews about the now-controversial pop star’s rise to fame.
In a savvy marketing move, industryites rubbed shoulders with fans, providing insiders with an idea of how the movie might play in theaters. At the Cineplex in Toronto at about 5 p.m. Saturday the gaggle of “Beliebers” were joined by buyers for the movie directed by Jon M. Chu.
Tight security saw purses and backpacks searched and cell phones and similar electronic devices checked at the door. IM Global’s wide-release label, Opus, is handling worldwide sales and Open Road is releasing it domestically. Chu’s first doc about Bieber, "Never Say Never," grossed nearly $100 million in 2011.

R. Kelly Sets 'Black Panties' Release Date

 R. Kelly Sets 'Black Panties' Release Date
R. Kelly has announced he'll release "Black Panties," his 12th studio album, on Nov. 11. At a listening session in Atlanta over the weekend, a sweat-drenched Kellz told attendees the album is the product of his artistic tenacity.
"I took my story and what I've been through and I channeled it," he said. "If you can take tragedy and turn it into triumph, that's when you've reached the zenith of a true champion. Don't mean to be too deep but this shit is real. I didn't run under a rock and go over here or there. I stayed focused. And I'm more focused then ever."
"Black Panies" follows up 2012's "Write Me Back," which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. In July he released the new album's first single, "My Story," featuring an assist from rapper 2 Chainz.
At the listening session, the soul-R&B icon said the album doesn't shy away from any elements of his crazy life.
"My story is all of this: sex, money, broke, women, clubs, and even church. It's all of those things mixed up into one," he said. "I'm not afraid of it, I understand it is the nature of life. This gift I have is a beautiful disease and I glad I got it."

Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy has debuted his new single.
In anticipation of a forthcoming solo album, titled "9," a Twitter account was created for the actor. The first, and only, tweet teased the cover art for the single, "Red Light," which features Snoop Lion.
Murphy sings and plays guitar on the track and Snoop Lion also contributes a verse to the reggae song.

Snoop Lion released an album, "Reincarnated," in April. The LP accompanied a documentary of the same title that was released in theaters in March.
The video for "Red Light" will debut on Sept. 9.

Adam Levine is Back in Fashion With New Menswear Line

Shawl-collar cardigans and sweatshirt blazers? You've got to be as cool as a rock star to pull off this stuff as trendsetting style.
Of course, Adam Levine, frontman of Maroon 5 and a mentor on NBC's "The Voice," is.
Levine previewed his first foray into design — a menswear line for Kmart — for a small group of fashion insiders on Tuesday. "It's great to see all the tiny things we worked on, all the little details, up close and finished," he said.
Adam Levine is Back in Fashion With New Menswear Line
"Honestly, I think fashion has a lot to do with when you wake up that day; a reflection of where you are, who you are and what you're going to do," said Levine. "I'm not making a pretentious fashion statement, but you have to put something on, and I'm not wearing a fig leaf."
He walked into the room wearing a purple T-shirt, slim black pants and tropical leaf-print Jams. With no bling, leather or luxury labels, one could imagine Levine putting some of the mass-market product, with a price range of $14.99-$69.99, into his own closet. "I definitely dress a certain way," he said.

Adam Levine, Who Called for 'Death' of Celeb Fragrances, Creates One of His Own, Henley Ts, plaid button-down shirts, baseball caps and a camouflage cargo jacket were part of the collection that will land in 500 stores on Oct. 1. Before that, there will be flash sales for Kmart's Shop Your Way online customers offering single pieces, available for a week, coupled with exclusive video content. Levine joins a crowded field of pop stars that spin their style into a fashion brand: Nicki Minaj and Selena Gomez are doing it for Kmart, too, and there's Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Gwen Stefani and Madonna, who shares her label with her daughter Lourdes. Victoria Beckham, formerly famous as a Spice Girl, is now recognized as a top-tier designer at New York Fashion Week.
"It's all creativity. Maybe that's where this whole music-fashion thing comes from," Levine said.
